At university I did a Fine Arts degree. We were encouraged to make marks on paper and canvas with whatever we could find. Having come from school where my final grades were based on how accurate my perspective and proportions of my life drawings were I did struggle to let go of the notion that my artwork needed to be ‘something’ and be fully representational of what was in front of me. I would stand in splattered dungarees throwing paint at a canvas on the floor feeling like a total fraud. I didn’t paint for many, many years as a young adult. I looked for a ‘proper’ job. One that was purposeful and worthwhile. One that would put dinner on the table. I was pretty restless for quite a long time. But then I slowly discovered that actually I could make a living being creative. I turned my desire to always be outside into a small business creating gardens. I learnt through trial and error how to take photographs, I created stories with cut flowers and I allowed myself time once a month to just make those marks on paper again.

Those marks became imagined gardens and landscapes. A world within a world. A place to escape for a while and truly bring the outside in. These murals are sometimes painted onto a studio wall or canvas and then turned into wallpaper panels so you might too turn a wall in your home into another world for a while.

Isabella is painted on my studio wall. She is a woodland walk with vast tall trees framing a calm and still pool. Wild flowers tumble freely and climb up into the trees. The distant horizon invites your eye to pause a while and transports you into another world full of possibilities.
